Protecting your car against loss or damage

Unless you can replace or repair your vehicle out-of-pocket, you’ll want some coverage to help protect against financial loss due to damage from collisions and more.

Comprehensive car insurance and collison damage

No matter what you drive, you’ll want coverage to help pay for the cost of repairing or replacing your vehicle if it’s damaged.

Choosing the right comprehensive coverage

Collision and other situations

Unless you can afford to repair or replace your vehicle out-of-pocket, we recommend including Collision and Comprehensive coverage in your policy.

Collision coverage

Pays for the cost of repairing or replacing your vehicle up to the actual cash value if it collides with another vehicle, the ground, or an object on the ground such as a guard rail.

Comprehensive coverage

Pays for the cost of repairing or replacing your vehicle up to the actual cash value if it’s damaged by other unexpected situations—such as falling or flying objects, vandalism, fire, theft or attempted theft, a natural disaster, or a riot or civil disobedience.

Direct compensation for property damage coverage*

Pays for the cost of repairing or replacing your vehicle (or its contents) if you are in an accident with another vehicle in your home province and the other party is found completely or partially at fault.

Under these conditions, you can submit a claim to your insurance company instead of the person at fault. This coverage will pay for a percentage of the cost of repairs or replacement equivalent to the percentage of fault attributed to the other insured party.

For example, if the repairs cost $1000, and the other party is 50% at fault, $500 will be payable under this coverage. The outstanding $500 would be paid under Collision coverage if you have purchased it (a deductible may apply).

Tip: We automatically quote policies with a $0 deductible for Direct Compensation for Property Damage coverage. However, you can call to increase your deductible to $300, which will lower your premium. Keep in mind that you will pay the deductible out of pocket if you make a claim.

* Mandatory in Ontario, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, and included under civil liability coverage in Quebec.

Additional coverage options

For most Canadians, Collision and Comprehensive coverage provide the right protection; however, there are other options, depending on your needs:

All Perils coverage

All Perils coverage combines Collision and Comprehensive coverage. In addition, it insures your vehicle against loss or damage should it be stolen by someone living in your home or by someone you have hired to drive, service or repair your vehicle.

Comprehensive coverage

Specified Perils coverage insures your vehicle against specific situations only (such as fire, theft or attempted theft, some natural disasters, and riots or civil disturbances).

Other types of coverage

Liability and Other Mandatory Car Insurance

Your car insurance policy must include some coverage to protect you financially against major risks.
